Presence, Final cut.

This is the final cut of film opening that we had made. Over all the opening took us  6 weeks to come up with an idea of what we was going to do a film opening on. We decided on the genre horror. Once we had decided on this, we then started to think of the shots and the locations of when and where we would be filming. Before we started filming our rough copy we stayed after school to make sure that all the shots fit in with what we wanted to do. We then thought of all the costumes, shot list and a script that we would need. We then started filming the rough copy. Once we had finished this and edited everything we exported the opening onto youtube. We got feedback from the rough copy and from this we could see what we could do to make the film opening better. we took on peoples advice and changed things to make things bettter. We also re-shot most of the shots because of the lightening. Once we had done all this and started to edit the shots we added in background sounds and sound effects. After we did this we added in titles. Once all of this was done we exported the final cut onto youtube.

Foley

This is the foley that is used in the filming opening that we made. The foley that we used is for the walking, doors opening, doors ratteling, and the typing for the interview. To do foley we had to film the sounds that we needed for our shot. When we uploaded this we then had to take away the video and leave the sound. Once we had edited the sound that we needed we put it together with the shots that were being used in the film.

Shooting schedule

Shooting schedule

Monday 25th November As a group we decided to film after school when it was dark and looked better for the shots. Each person in our group has a different role in the group that needs to be filmed. Emma and Kieran being agents. Nick is the camera man and Charlie being possessed. The first couple of shots that needed to be were of Emma walking in through the door. We then worked out what would be best to shoot next with the lightening and the equipment that we had. We used this day as a practice of shooting and getting used to our roles. Whilst working out the shots we also worked out the script, timing of each shot, and the number of shots.
Tuesday 26th November Once we had looked over our draft from the previous day we started to film the shots that we needed for our full draft. This way we all had the costumes that we needed for our roles. Some of the shots were done during class. The shots that we shot on this day were the first few shots. Emma walking through the door, walking up to the table and talking to Kieran, Kieran then responding. Each of these shots were clear but had to be re shot because of laughter and speech. After we fixed this we went into another room (the interview room) to film to shots of Charlie Ann. Before you see this you see a match on action shot of Emma walking through the door. Wednesday 27th November We carried on with the rest of the shooting for the film. Starting off with Charlie filming the rest of her interview dialogue with Emma. Once we had finished this we worked out how we were going to end the filming. As we worked this out we filmed some more shots that would fit in and make up for time. This was the shots of the rattling of the door handle and the lights flickering on and off. We then shot the ending of the film. Emma trying to get out the door to see Charlie looking through the door. You then see Charlie walk off into the dark.
Monday 9th December After putting all the footage onto the computer and editing it all with music, sound effects, transitions and titles. When we got our feedback we were told that the lightening was bad on a few shots. This meant we had to re shoot more so that it would be perfect for our end opening. The shots that we redone on this day was Charlie in the interview room from a CCTV angle. The other shots we couldn’t film in lesson time as the location we are using for the filming was being used. Emma re shot the shots that she was in with a better lighting after school.
Tuesday 10th DecemberThe shot that we filmed on the previous day of Charlie from a CCTV angle had to be shot again as it was bumpy the previous time filmed. Before we filmed this we thought of a better idea to make the shot more effective.
Wednesday 11th DecemberEmma was able to re shot the rest of her role after school as the location that we were meant to be using was being used. The shots that she re done had better lightening and the dialogue was more clear. The shot that we made of Charlie from a CCTV angle was put onto a laptop for a better effect.
Thursday 12 December Emma, Charlie and Kieran filmed the last bits of the of their roles for the final opening. The lightening was better and the dialogue was clearer. More speech was added in and other shots were cut.

Script

Presence - Script
This is the script for our opening scene. We designed then when we chose on a new idea for our scene, so it does not fully reflect the storyboard or other plans.

Location - Hallway and interview room of a police station.

(Emma walks slowly towards Kieran, who is sitting down on a desk looking at a monitor)

Emma (E) (Somewhat annoyed): So, what's the problem then?
Kieran (K) (Glances towards the monitor) Take a look for yourself.
E: I'll go deal with her, you're done for the day.
K (Relieved, walking out): I'll lock up, yeah?

(Emma brushes up and walks inside to the room, sitting down)

E (while typing): So what's the problem?

#Charlie-Ann (CA) (Deadpan, no emotion): They've got... me.
E (visibly surprised): What do you mean they've got you? Tell me what happened, where did this all start?
CA (looking around): Don't you see them? They're everywhere.

(Lights begin to flick on and off, door handle begins to rattle)

E (shocked, scared) What the hell's going on!?

(Emma goes up to fix the lights and the door)
CA: I wouldn't do that if I were you.

(Lights go off, Charlie-Ann's chair is empty. Sees her in the window)
E: *scream*

Film Opening First Draft and Feedback

This is the first draft of our film opening.
In this opening there are a lot of things that need to be changed. The lightening in the some of the shots needs to be changed as some shots are lighter then others. Another shot that needs to be changed is when Charlie is being caught on cctv, you cant see what is being wrote on the paper she is writing on. We will have to change this so that you can see what is being said. When we re shot the bits that need to be done we will have to make sure that shoot them at the right time so that the lightening doesnt go wrong.

Feedback

When we got the feedback from our class and other classes we was told some postive and negative things. The postive feedback we got about the sounds  was that the music that is in our opening goes well with the rest of the film it fits in. There would need to be a more scarier sound on the last shot when the hand is shown dragging down the door. The sound effects that we could use would be screaming on the shot when Emma is trying to get out the door. The feedback that we got about the acting was that it was a good, and it worked well. The negative feedback about the acting was that some of the shots Kieran smirkes in and it isnt relevant to the story. The feedback that we got about the camera shots was that they were good steady shots, they all fitted in well with the rest of the film. There was one shot at the end that was a little shacky and rough that we have to be re-shot. Alot of the feedback said that the titles were plain but you could tell that it was for a horror genre.
The feedback that we got back from the teachers was that we would need to re shoot the shots that have bad lightening, This is only a couple of shots. We would also need to change the titles so that it wasnt as clear and plain but you would be able to tell that it was a horror genre film. The last bit of feedback that we got from the teachers was that we need to take out the sound when the lights flicker.

Genre conventions and our production

How our film relates to standard horror conventions

Camera shots:

Our film has multiple camera shots that relate to the horror genre. An example is the high angle shots which will be present throughout the piece, especially in the first few shots in the interview room at the beginning of the piece. We also utilise depth of field in the corridor scenes to create suspense as people move a lot more slowly in these scenes. All of these shots are widely utilised to create tension and increase immersion within horror films and we plan to use them to the best of our abilities.

Cinematography:

Lighting is by far one of our most important factors we need to incorporate into our theme. We plan to film in the dark, to create an atmosphere of fear and tension much like camera shots are used for. Every horror film ALWAYS incorporates dark lighting so not having it would be hugely detrimental to our final piece.
Characters:

We will have two characters present in the opening scene, and these adhere to modern horror conventions. We will try to utilise “the blonde”who inevitably dies first (who is Emma in this case) and also the heroine (who is Charlie-Ann) who represents purity and being a saviour. We will also briefly incorporate the iconic villain which is present in a lot of horror films, but only very briefly as we do not want to devalue the enigma code in the opening scene.

Location:

We plan to film at school, but at night when the school is empty and rather dark. This sense of subverted familiarity is a very scary concept as it changes the audience’s perception of a place.

Sound:

Our film will include exaggerated diegetic sound in order build up tension within the film and scare the audience right off the bat, and will also include short and brief non-diegetic sounds in order to shock the audience, both of these and standard conventions.
