Title sequences

What is a title sequence?
A title sequence is the method that presents film or television programmes.

What is the function of a title sequence?
The title will let you know what the film is about. It will let you see the cast members and key productions. Show you what the film is made up of.

The Conjuring

Use of typography elements (texts):
You can see by looking at this title sequence that its a horror film, you can see this by the writing. All the writing is bold black and white and don't have much effects on them. The writing on the sequence different, some small and others big and bold. The big and bold writing is to stand out, and the small writing could be something that is not always that important but is worth reading.
Use of visual imagery/sound elements:The actors that you see in the sequence are all modern actors, you can't see these actors well because of the mood and bold colour that the sequence has been made in. When looking at the actors you can see that the words have covered over the children's face. The other actors you can see are very hidden. It could be the main actors that don't want to be shown until the film. You can see by looking at the sequence that the film is a horror. When looking at this title sequence the audience would feel they have to watch the film now to be able to see what the sequence is trying to tell you before the film is shown. If the audience was interested in a horror film it would make them want to find out what was going out, and why everything is so dark and bold in the title sequence.
Mood/feeling:
The mood you would get from this title sequence is a bad scared mood. This is because you can't see much in the title sequence because its very bold and dark. When you look at the sequence it makes you think about what could be going on. The dark mysterious look on the title sequence could make the audience scared before watching the film. The dark look is a unique look, if somebody was scared of the dark they would turn the light on, but when the audience is looking at this sequence they would be able to, this could make the audience scared.

The use of the above makes the film look scary and you can tell straight away that it would be a horror or thriller. It brings a downer to some people before they watch it as by the sequence they wouldn't be able to predict what was going on.

Batman

Use of typography elements (texts):
The text in this title sequence is all the same, the colour of all the writing is yellow. Most of the writing is written in capital letters. With the background being plain black and the writing being in yellow it stands out a lot to the audience. The names of the actors that play in the film are written in capitals because they play an important role and they need to stand out to the audience. The one thing that stands out the most is the name of the film. The name is written more bold and bigger so that it stands out to the audience to remind them of what the film is called.
Use of visual imagery/sound elements:
The imagery on this title sequence is is a bold dark background. This creates a dark feeling to the audience about what could happen. The sound of this film creates horrific thoughts to the audience and plays along to the dark feeling in the title sequence.
Mood/Feeling:
The mood that the audience would get from this title sequence is mysterious. This is because its dark and gloomy background and only little things stand out. The colours from the title sequence could create a bad mood to the audience and make them feel like something bad is going to happen. The mood of this makes the audience want to carry on watching the film because everything in the title sequence has stood out for them.

Over all the the title sequence makes the audience think. They think about what could happen. They think about this because of the music that is being played whilst the sequence is up. They also would think this because of the way everything is set. The bold writing and the mysterious music makes it sound like something is going to jump out or something bad could happen.

Sweeney Todd

Use of typography elements (texts):
In this title sequence the writing is mostly white. The font size of this is small/medium. The placement of the writing is mostly to the left of the screen. The writing that is in white and to the left of the screen are the actors of this film. This is one of the most important things to include in a title sequence. The name of the film is written is a different colour. Its written in red because it will stand out the most out of all the other writing, Its the most important part of the title sequence. By looking at the way the title is written you can see that the film is going to be different. You can see this because of the title written in red would normally be something bad.
Use of visual imagery/sound elements:
The most effective imagery in the sequence would be the blood. The blood is an effective way to show something gloomy and gory. The blood makes the audience think that something bad is going to happen and that the blood is a clue that it could be involved. The blood also shows an animated film that could fit in with everything that is show in the title sequence. In most parts of the title sequence blood is involved. This makes the audience think about what could happen and why its shown so much.
Mood/Feeling:
When looking at the title sequence it makes you feel scared about what could be going on in the film.  The mood makes you feel scared because of what you can see, the blood, and the mysterious props on the title sequence.

Richard Morrison says that when you are making a title sequence you should give away to much. This is important so that the audience would want to watch the rest of the film. This is something that would be considered when i am making my final product.
Richard said The batman 1989 environment was not that homogenized. In fact, there weren't many people on the same platform and we were all individual. By what Richard said about The Batman title sequence he thought that it was successful and was proud of what was shown. 'Nobody did anything like it before so that's why it probably retained its timeless feel'
Richard felt that The Sweeney title sequence was successful as he said 'What i enjoyed most was coming up with the whole idea. When this title sequence was made he felt some things were difficult 'Animating blood and its movement become the most crucial and challenging element of the sequence. we had to build special platforms within which we imitated blood movement and filmed it'

Prelim Task Powerpoint

In the powerpoint you can see everything that we have put into the filming that we will be doing for the prelim task. In the powerpoint you will see the storyboard that we will be going buy when we are filming each shot. Also in the powerpoint you will see what we did at each stage whilst planning the filming. You can see that we have wrote what we have done each lesson in a chart this way its easier to see what we have done and what needs to be done. Each person in the group would have a specific task to do before we started filming so that we could of done it done quicker. In the last slide of this PowerPoint you can see that we planned out each of the camera shots, and how long it would go on for, the props we were going to use, the script, and the sounds that we are going to use through out the film.

PS. i love you, opening scene analysis

For this task we were asked to find a trailer or opening scene and analysis everything you would see in a film. The genre of the film i have chosen for this task is Rom-com.
Sounds
The first thing you can hear when you watch this would be the background music. The background music is a loving calm sound. This will attract viewers and make the audience know that it is a loving, caring rom-com film. During the film you would hear many sound effects such as when the lifeguard jacket inflates, you can hear and see this happening. There would be on and off sounds throughout the film of things you can hear but can not see, this would be the talking of the man that has died, you can hear him talking clearly but you cant see him.
Camera Shots
Throughout the trailer you will see a lot of different camera shots. The first camera shots you see are close ups, you see close ups to the birthday cake, and also to the actor when she opens the letters. You see an extreme wide shot of the bridge. You see a lot of long shots when the characters are walking. When the actor is running down the road this camera angle would be stedicam as it follows the actor as accurate as possible.
Actors, Costume, Make up & Hair.
During the film there is only 2 main actors, and one of them being dead, the other being the wife of the man who has died. Each actor that plays in this film has been put on the role that they are most perfect at. You can see that the costume changes a lot throughout the film. At the start they were in their underwear and joking around, as the film carried on they were just wearing casual clothing that you would see people wear everyday. The costumes seemed to change every time a letter was wrote, eg when the letter asked the actor to do karaoke she dressed up in a specific way to do this. The hair of the actors wasn't styled in a specific way. You could see that when the man died the wife didn't make a lot of effort in her appearance and her styled hair may have been different to everyone else's. The makeup was casual throughout the film. It was an everyday make up style. You could also see that when the man died the wife didn't use makeup, or this is what the film made it look like. There could of been make up that made the actor look upset, and lost about what had just happened.
Lightening.
The lightening in the film changes a lot. There is many different parts in the film where the lightening changes because of what is been acted in the scene. At first when you see the couple in the home it seems dark and the only light is from the house lamps and candles. This doesn't give off much light. The lightening is similar of the scene of the funeral, its very dark and upsetting. The lighting changes when the letters are sent out and something different is done everyday. When the girls go fishing the lightening is natural day light, there is no other lightening around the scene that could change this. The lightening seems to change depending on the actors moods. When the actor is happy and is out enjoying herself the lightening seems to be bright and cheerful but when the actor is in a bad mood the lightening seems to be dark, upsetting and gloomy.
Setting and props
The setting seems to change when the letters come through. The events that the letters tell her to do seem to stay in the town where she is from. But there is one letter that she has to go to Ireland for, this is a change of scenery for her. There are a lot of different props through the film and you seem to see one quite a bit, this is the letters that get sent the whole way throughout. You also see props such as the voice recorder, the birthday cake and many more. Each prop is sent with the letter.
Facial expression & Body language
The facial expression changes a lot through the film. This is a film where the moods change more then usual. When the husband dies you can see that the wife is upset and doesn't know what to do. You can see this by her facial expression, She doesn't show any emotion apart from that she is very upset and hurt. This changes throughout the film when she does different activities or she is with people. When you see her go fishing with the girls, you can see she is enjoying herself, you can see this from her facial expressions as she is smiling and laughing. This is also the same for her body language, depending on what mood she is in and what she is doing, will depend on the way she acts about things.

The Conjuring opening scene analysis

For this task we was asked to analyse 3 different genres and write about everything you see in the film on a media term. The genre of this film is horror.
Sounds
There are many different sounds in this trailer. One of the first bits of sounds effects that you hear is the door opening, you can also see this. Throughout the trailer there is something called on and off sounds, This is when you can hear someone speaking or a sound effect but can not see where its coming from. There are many sound effects through the film, the same sound effect is repeated a lot and this is the clapping of the people when they play the 'clapping game'. Whilst this game is being played there is a song playing in the background. The song is unusual and makes the viewers want to carry on watching the film to see if the song begins to make any sense to the rest of the film. The music changes throughout because the film starts to change and become scary. The sounds that you hear always relate to what is happening in the film, and would make the viewer think about whats going on. It would scare the viewers a lot more.
Camera shots
The camera shots change a lot throughout the trailer. The first shot you see is a tracking shot before they open the door, the camera moves in a straight line to the door as they come through. Before the family start to play the clapping game you see the mum getting span around, this shot is called a medium shot. When you see the photo frames smashing down the stairs, the camera shot is called a tilt down, and you see this shot as you were looking down from a height. As you see the mum walking around looking for the claps she can hear the camera shot is called a long shot as you can see her whole body and what she is doing. Whilst the mum shouts 'who is that' this is also a tracking camera shot, as the camera follows the actor round in a circle. There is also a extreme wide shot that you can see as the mum walks through into another room after hearing another clap. There are many shots throughout the film where the camera has zoomed into a specific prop or actor, this is done to make the viewers find this more scary, and is appropriate for the filming.
Actors, Costume, Hair & Makeup
There are different actors in the film, which would depend on what they are wearing. Towards the start of the film all the actors look casual, wearing normal clothes, having normal makeup, and there hair being the same as it could be everyday. The actors have these roles because they could of had experience and cover their roles in a perfect way. Throughout the film the costume stays the same, there isn't a specific dress code in the film, however the clothes that they do wear do look old. The makeup also stays the same throughout the film but changes slightly when the mum is looking for who is clapping, you can see that the actor is scared and wants to know what is going on, the makeup has made her look pale, this makes the viewers know she is scared of what she is hearing.
Lightening
The lightening changes a lot throughout the film. At the beginning of the film when the actors come through the door the lightening is natural daylight, as they enter the house its becomes a bit more darker and gloomy. Before the film starts to get scary the lightening is normal, its like an everyday scenery. This soon changes when the film starts to get a bit more scary. When the film gets scary the lightening changes a lot, everything starts to get dark and there is only light on specific things, such as faces, and things that stand out to scare you more.
Setting and Props.
The setting of the film is very mysterious, its set in a old house in the middle of no where. When you see the house before the film properly starts you will see how isolated the house looks, with loads of plants and trees around it. The film is set in a gloomy dark place. The prop that you see a lot through the film is the blindfold that they use to play the clapping game, the other prop that you see quite a bit through the film is the wardrobe.
Facial expressions and body language.
There are a lot of facial expressions throughout the film. At the start of the film you see excitement of the children as they enter the house, you can also tell by there body language, they way they run through the door also shows how excited they are. As the film goes on you can see how much the facial expressions change depending on what you can see on the film. When the mum is looking for the sound that is clapping, you can tell by her facial expressions that she is scared and she doesn't want to be doing what she is doing. You can also tell by her body language how scared she is as she walks slowly towards the sounds that you can hear.

elf opening scene analysis

For this task we were asked to analysis 3 different genres using everything you would see in a film. This genre is comedy.
Sounds
One of the first bits of sound you can hear is the the Christmas effects in the background, these are the snowflakes falling.  This automatically brings you to think the film is about Christmas. Throughout the film you would hear different sound effects, in this trailer you hear the sound effects of when the elf bangs his head, you can also hear the sound effects of the car breaking when the elf runs across the road to go into the shop. These are only some of the sounds effects throughout the film. The sound in the background changes throughout the film depending on the scene. On many parts of the film you see on and off screen sounds, an example of this would be when the mum and dad are talking about elf staying with them, you then hear elf talking but you can see him.
Camera shots
In each of the scenes you can see different camera shots, when the camera is on the church the camera effect is tilt up. When the elf is walking towards the shop before he gets run over the camera zooms out onto a long shot this way you can see more of whats going on. There is also a camera shot of stedicam this is when the elf walks to see his dad with a present. This stedicam camera shot is fast this way it would of had to be done accurately. When the elf is in the escalator that spins round the camera zooms into his face when he gets closer, this also happens when elf has the manager running towards him. The camera zooms into elf as the manager runs closer and closer to him. When the film is being shot, you can see in many different parts of the clip the different angles and frames that the camera shots make to make the film for effective.
Actors, Costume and Hair & Makeup
All the actors in the film are completely different. Each one of them gives off a different impression. Each of the actors are given the role because they are appropriate age specific and cover the role in a perfect way. The way the actors dress is appropriate to the roll that they play. A good example of this is the way that elf is dressed. He has an elf costume to show off what he plays in the film. By him wearing this costume it makes the viewers of this film realise what he has got this costume for and how well its been working out for him to wear this. Other actors such as the dad wear casual clothes. The clothes that they wear give off the actors that they play, where they work in the film and how its appropriate in the film. eg, The dad wears business clothes as he an important part in a company and has to look presentable. For most of the actors in the film there isn't much fake make up that is put into the film for the viewers everything that is on the actors is casual. This is better for the film so that it doesn't look fake and animated.
Lightening
The lightening of the film is different in a lot of ways. When the film shows shots that were outside the lightening is all natural daylight. This changes when the lightening is inside, the way the camera is being shot depends on the lightening of the scene. when the characters are outside at night the lightening will also change again because of the time of the night.
Setting and props
The film is set in New York. The time of the year is Christmas and everything in New York Christmas is involved with. The weather starts off being sunny but then it gets cold and snowing. At the start of the film it starts of with most of the film being set in day time, but by the end of the film its outside, dark at night. There are not many props in the film that are noticeable. The props that you see are the present that elf buys for his dad, and the coke bottle that elf drinks from at the dinner table.
Facial expression and Body language
The facial expressions on the some of the characters are different at many times. When elf meets his dad for the first time his dad looks shocked, and you can tell this by the way he reacts and the facial expression he pulls. Another part of the film when you can see different body language and facial expressions is when elf starts singing to his dad. Not only can you see the facial expression from his dad but also from the other people around him.
