Final Opening

elf opening scene analysis

For this task we were asked to analysis 3 different genres using everything you would see in a film. This genre is comedy.
Sounds
One of the first bits of sound you can hear is the the Christmas effects in the background, these are the snowflakes falling.  This automatically brings you to think the film is about Christmas. Throughout the film you would hear different sound effects, in this trailer you hear the sound effects of when the elf bangs his head, you can also hear the sound effects of the car breaking when the elf runs across the road to go into the shop. These are only some of the sounds effects throughout the film. The sound in the background changes throughout the film depending on the scene. On many parts of the film you see on and off screen sounds, an example of this would be when the mum and dad are talking about elf staying with them, you then hear elf talking but you can see him.
Camera shots
In each of the scenes you can see different camera shots, when the camera is on the church the camera effect is tilt up. When the elf is walking towards the shop before he gets run over the camera zooms out onto a long shot this way you can see more of whats going on. There is also a camera shot of stedicam this is when the elf walks to see his dad with a present. This stedicam camera shot is fast this way it would of had to be done accurately. When the elf is in the escalator that spins round the camera zooms into his face when he gets closer, this also happens when elf has the manager running towards him. The camera zooms into elf as the manager runs closer and closer to him. When the film is being shot, you can see in many different parts of the clip the different angles and frames that the camera shots make to make the film for effective.
Actors, Costume and Hair & Makeup
All the actors in the film are completely different. Each one of them gives off a different impression. Each of the actors are given the role because they are appropriate age specific and cover the role in a perfect way. The way the actors dress is appropriate to the roll that they play. A good example of this is the way that elf is dressed. He has an elf costume to show off what he plays in the film. By him wearing this costume it makes the viewers of this film realise what he has got this costume for and how well its been working out for him to wear this. Other actors such as the dad wear casual clothes. The clothes that they wear give off the actors that they play, where they work in the film and how its appropriate in the film. eg, The dad wears business clothes as he an important part in a company and has to look presentable. For most of the actors in the film there isn't much fake make up that is put into the film for the viewers everything that is on the actors is casual. This is better for the film so that it doesn't look fake and animated.
Lightening
The lightening of the film is different in a lot of ways. When the film shows shots that were outside the lightening is all natural daylight. This changes when the lightening is inside, the way the camera is being shot depends on the lightening of the scene. when the characters are outside at night the lightening will also change again because of the time of the night.
Setting and props
The film is set in New York. The time of the year is Christmas and everything in New York Christmas is involved with. The weather starts off being sunny but then it gets cold and snowing. At the start of the film it starts of with most of the film being set in day time, but by the end of the film its outside, dark at night. There are not many props in the film that are noticeable. The props that you see are the present that elf buys for his dad, and the coke bottle that elf drinks from at the dinner table.
Facial expression and Body language
The facial expressions on the some of the characters are different at many times. When elf meets his dad for the first time his dad looks shocked, and you can tell this by the way he reacts and the facial expression he pulls. Another part of the film when you can see different body language and facial expressions is when elf starts singing to his dad. Not only can you see the facial expression from his dad but also from the other people around him.
